Literacy Autobiography
I do not exactly remember the first time I became literate since it was so long ago but I believe it to be when I was in the first grade. I was put into an English as a Second Language class which I also do not remember how I even got into or how kids were selected to be a part of the class but it was a good thing that I did. I think there were one or two teachers there that helped everybody and it was all very basic words accompanied with pictures to make it easier to understand what we were learning. I was not discouraged because the class was actually kind of fun since it came pretty simple to me. One of my earliest experiences with literacy was just reading easy words in general and then writing them while also learning how to pronounce them too. The teacher also made us draw the words too which I would say significantly impacted my development.
I began to feel more literate as time went on since the ESL classes were everyday and I never missed school. I would like to say that I experienced everything those classes had to offer by the time I went into the second grade and school became much easier for me than it was before. I think I still had a tutor that came to my house after school to teach me a session of more advanced stuff in my grade school years. The activities I tend to enjoy were probably the reading and viewing ones which is exactly what it sounds like. It was not like I had a particular preference since it did not really matter which activity I did but the reading and viewing ones probably stood out the most since I still do a ton of that today. Nothing really frustrated me since there was not anything that came out to be too difficult and I would just simply ask for help even if it was. My role model was definitely my teacher since they were the one that taught me everything I needed to know and make my school life easier.
I feel like literacy is one of the most important things to learn in life because it is everywhere and pretty much a basic necessity if anyone ever wants to get anywhere. I continue to use literacy every single day whether it can be ranging from doing this assignment or something as simple as reading the subtitles of a show. I guess the biggest thing that inspires my literacy development is school since I am pretty much required to use it and gain more knowledge. I would not know where I would be today without literacy but it would most likely be not as fortunate as I am right now if I had to predict. I am just glad that I was put into that ESL class back in the first grade or else my life might have been on a more struggling and difficult path compared to today.
John,
ReplyDeleteThanks for carrying us back into your childhood and school years. Literacy is a powerful tool! You make a good point of that.
My suggestion is that in your next blog, try including a picture or a graphic or two to accompany your writing. A picture can be "worth a 1,000 words.;
Thanks!
Professor K
PS I love your blog name and the fish pic!
ReplyDeleteHi John, I too was in a bilingual ESL class when I was in Kindergarten. Being in these types of classrooms are a privilege because looking back at it, I think if I would have been placed in a general education class I would not have excelled. It would have been detrimental to my young grammar school education. Coming from a family where English was also their second language, I understand where you are coming from because you had to also learn a whole other language.
ReplyDeleteHi John, I agree with you because I also came from a family that did not speak English as a first language and it was very difficult school wise. Going to school and not knowing English was very hard. Because I was put in ESL classes that help me become literate and if I did not take those classes it would have been difficult for me today.
